Thursday night at Robinson Pavilion was not built for standing still.
Chase & Status rolled into Perth for the opening night of their three-date Australian-only run, bringing Section 63 to a sold-out room packed with more than 4,000 drum and bass fanatics ready to ride every filthy BPM wave thrown their way. And mate, they got exactly what they came for.
From the moment Sammy the Sinner hit the decks, the room was moving. She set the pace straight off the bat, whipping the early punters into a proper frenzy and somehow holding that intensity for more than an hour without looking like she was even close to slowing down. No easing into the night here. We were thrown straight into the deep end, and the pool was full of positive vibes and rising blood pressure.
Then came WA’s own ShockOne, keeping the energy high and lifting the volume, or at least it bloody felt like it. The sound hit harder, the lights ramped up, and the expectation in the room started building at a dangerous pace. You could feel everyone waiting for that main-event moment.
When Chase & Status arrived, the place simply erupted.
The lads tore through their set with relentless precision, creating a full-scale sensory overload of strobes, smoke, lasers, balaclava-clad dancers and, because apparently subtlety was never on the menu, cars on fire. The visual detail matched the chaos of the music perfectly. Every beat had the crowd moving in unison, bodies bouncing, hands in the air and faces lit up by enough strobe light to make an optometrist nervous.
There were flares, heat, noise and enough energy in the room to power half of Perth. At one point I felt like a moth to a flame, especially while trying to photograph it all, but that is exactly the point. This was high-energy chaos, carefully controlled and delivered at full throttle.
I left with ringing ears, a sore foot, a sweaty shirt and probably a few kilos lighter.
One of the best drum and bass sets I have seen in a long time.
