EP REVIEW: FAWN – “HEAVY WATER”

PERTH BASED 4 PIECE ROCKERS DELIVERING A 5 TRACK INSIGHT INTO THEIR JOURNEY

Emotion in a Bottle: A Moody Journey Through “Heavy Water” by Fawn

Fawn’s debut EP, “Heavy Water,” emerges from the Australian music scene with a raw, gritty sound that captivates listeners from the very first note. Hailing from Perth, this four-piece ensemble—comprised of Simon Morton on bass, Adam Sciullo on drums, Regan McVeigh on lead guitar and backing vocals, and Lou Garoux on lead vocals and guitar—delivers a five-track collection that is as immersive as it is gripping.

Self-produced at Superfreaks in Joondalup, “Heavy Water” eschews unnecessary embellishments, focusing instead on distilling pure emotion into each track. The result is an EP that feels like a journey, a narrative of progression intimately tied to the band’s own evolution.

From the opening chords to the closing notes, Fawn guides listeners through a sonic landscape that is as moody as it is evocative. Each track unfolds like a chapter in a story, with the band’s collective journey serving as the thread that binds them together.

One of the EP’s standout features is its instrumentation. Simon Morton’s bass lines anchor the songs with a solid foundation, while Regan McVeigh’s lead guitar and Adam Sciullo’s drums provide dynamic layers that ebb and flow with the emotion of each composition. Guitar solos soar and weave their own verses, adding depth and texture to the overall sound.

The pacing of the EP is deliberate, with each song flowing seamlessly into the next. It’s a journey that pulls listeners along like a river, building momentum until it reaches its culmination in the closing track, “Where the (Oceans) Meet.”

While each track on “Heavy Water” has its own merits, “Castles” stands out as a particularly well-crafted tale of life’s trials and triumphs. With Lou Garoux’s vocals taking center stage, the song feels tailor-made for live performances, where his vocal prowess can truly shine.

In conclusion, “Heavy Water” is a well-executed EP that showcases Fawn’s tight delivery and emotive storytelling. It’s a tantalizing appetizer that leaves listeners eager for more, hinting at the promise of even greater offerings to come from these talented musicians. Keep an eye on Fawn—they’re poised to make waves in the music scene. This album has the scent of early Pearl Jam with a hint of Silverchair – self described as “Stoner Pop Grunge meets Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple” Its sure to get a few followers.
